From the book of the same title by Steven Erikson. The influence of the beautiful Pacific Northwest is evident in this cover.
Your work for the Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen is fantastic! It really captures the dark and brutal nature of their stories, as well as the rich and tragically beautiful details of their settings Did you just do books 3 through 8?
Yes. After that the publisher decided they wanted to use the British covers going forward. Don’t know why. Maybe they thought they served the books better, or maybe they were saving some money…
Wow, thanks for replying! And so quickly too! I found my way to this website because I saw the Summer Dragon out at Barnes and Noble and I put it on my (thoroughly extensive) list of books to buy/read. (I like collecting books just as much as reading them, particularly Sci-Fi and Fantasy hardcovers with cool jacket art) I went home and picked up my copy of Reaper’s Gale and saw your name listed as the cover artist. I thought to myself, “hmmm Todd Lockwood…sounds familiar…” So I looked you up online and found this site! I was so psyched upon finding this great collection of fantasy art from an artist who seems to be really enthusiastic about what they do, that I went out and bought The Summer Dragon today!
(sorry for the long post, I really love fantasy)
Oh and I had another question: As a cover artist, do you read all the books you do work for, or do you just consult with the author/publisher on certain scenes/settings/characters they want you to portray?
