This painting was part of a series of covers in which the main character views out through a frame or window of some sort. In this case, it is Wulfgar, who does spend some time in jail in the book, but is also trapped by the demons in his own head. The piece is in a style known as "Trompe-l'oeil," or literally, "Fool the Eye." The wood texture turned out so well that people cannot resist touching it to see if it's real...
